Preface

Steve Earle, songwriter and performer, talking about his songwriting "apprenticeship:"

"It was a real-live Old World-style apprenticeship," Earle recalls. "They really did care about my development as a writer. With Townes, it was, 'Here, you need to read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee and while you are at it, read War and Peace, too.' Part of what I'm teaching this class is the idea that if you wanna write songs on a level that approaches literature, then there's certain work you have to do. You have to get your ass into a library every once in a while. You're probably gonna have to read."

Raab, Scott. "Steve Earle, Folk Hero." Esquire, June 2000 (pg. 80).
