Introduction

These flowcharts provide a visual overview of the research process with links to the basic sources used.

Researching a Company

CHOOSE COMPANY

Consult directories to:
  1. Verify the company name, address, and type of business (SIC & NAICS codes).
  2. Find out whether it is a subsidiary or division; if so, may need to use the parent's name to find financial information.
  3. Find out whether it is private or public.

NEED MORE INFORMATION? CONSULT:

Article indexes
  1. Search an appropriate index.
  2. Identify articles about the company.
  3. Use Get It @ ASU links in the index's search results or Library One Search to see if we have the articles cited.
  4. Use the online link or the Interlibrary Loan request in step 3 to access the article and read it.
Books
  1. Search the ASU Online Catalog.
  2. Look up company name (including parent company and former names).
  3. Identify books of interest in the search results.
  4. Use call no. & location or e-book link to find book and read it.

Company SWOT Analysis

Find analyses of a company's strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats in these databases following the instructions provided. Reports are usually only available for the larger public companies.

  1. Search all relevant indexes.
  2. Identify articles about the industry by keyword and⁄or by SIC or NAICS code.
  3. Use Get It @ ASU links in the index's search results or Library One Search to see if we have the articles cited.

Books

Statistics Sources

  1. Databases: ProQuest Statistical InsightPassport  (mostly consumer products),  EIU (see Market Indicators & Forecasts)
  2. Government sources: Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Labor StatisticsInternational Trade Administration, and more.
