Frequently Used Library Guides

Basic Research

Basic search techniques can be as simple as a Google search or as complicated as the Boolean in algebra. For the detailed searching techniques, use the Searching Techniques tab.

Some of the basic searches are

" " around a word phrase -- "solar energy"

AND means the article has to talk about both,  AND makes search results smaller -- cats AND dogs

OR means the article can talk about either one. OR makes searches bigger -- cats OR dogs

SU in most databases means this has to be a subject term -- SU (cats OR dogs)  has to be in the subject terms list.

TI means the word has to be in the title of the article -- TI (cats OR dogs) has to be in the title of the article.
