The Athletic Group Pass

This guide explains how to create an account to use the library's subscription to The Athletic


The Athletic, a New York Times Company, delivers in-depth sports coverage of your favorite teams and leagues. Access includes everything from breaking news and live commentary to long-form features, exclusive interviews, podcasts and more.

Arizona State University Library provides access to The Athletic for all current students, staff, and faculty members with a group pass.


The Athletic and The New York Times are considered separate products. All users will need to activate group passes and log in separately to these websites. ASU users with a current nytimes.com account CAN use the same New York Times login credentials to activate the group pass and for logging in in the future.

Activate the Group Pass

ASU users can activate their group pass to The Athletic by following these steps:

  1. Activate your pass: https://libguides.asu.edu/the-athletic

    • NOTE: Users must log out of any existing The Athletic account before clicking on the redemption link.

  2. You will be taken to a new page where you can create or renew an account.

  3. You may be redirected to myASU login page to authenticate with DUO. Please sign in as if you were signing in to myASU.

  4. Use your ASURite@asu.edu as your username.

  5. For single sign-on (SSO), select Continue with Google, Apple, or Facebook.

OR choose to Sign Up with Email, with your ASURite@asu.edu, you will be prompted to enter your first and last name and create a password.

  1. After you create your account, you will be redirected to the Welcome to The Athletic screen.

  2. Follow the prompts from Let's Get Started to customize your feeds. Note: you must select at least one team and one league.

  3. Once signed in, YOU will appear in the upper right corner.

Using The Athletic

Once your account is created, access theathletic.com from any web browser, signing in with login and password if requested.

Do not bookmark the redemption link in step one of this guide.
