Online Encyclopedias can be a great place to get general background information: 

Encyclopedia of Crime and PunishmentCovers a wide range of topics, including ethical and legal issues.  Each volume has an appendix, and include career, web resources, professional and scholarly organizations, and bibliography. 

Encyclopedia of Race and CrimeProvides an overview on issues both historical and contemporary, with entries on race and ethnicity and their impact on crime and the administration of justice.

Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice: Covers topics in the fields of activism, civil engagement, and social justice.  Includes biographies. 

Encyclopedia of Crime & Justice Overview of sociology, psychology, history and economics in the field of crime and justice.
