NEW 210, From Promise to Practice

Occupational Outlook Handbook and O*Net

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is a must-use source for anyone researching careers.  Its strength is the amount of detail provided, including:

  • What people in specific careers and jobs do;
  • The work environment;
  • What one needs to do to become a professional or worker in a particular field;
  • The pay and the future outlook for specific jobs and careers;
  • And more!

OOH is your first stop when researching careers.

O*Net Online  is a companion to the "Occupational Outlook Handbook" but gives you a very different perspective.  It's focus is on the specific skills, tasks, knowledge, abilities, work activities and requirements needed to do a particular job.  It is very detailed.

Other Career Guides

These are additional titles for reference only in print at the Fletcher Library.

Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance, 2015.

Job Hunter's Sourcebook, 2015.

Ferguson Career Coach Series, 2008-2009.

Different from the others in that each title focuses on a different industry (for example, arts, law enforcement, health, etc.) and offers advice on being successful once you have the job.

The ASU Library acknowledges the twenty-three Native Nations that have inhabited this land for centuries. Arizona State University's four campuses are located in the Salt River Valley on ancestral territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) Indian Communities, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today. ASU Library acknowledges the sovereignty of these nations and seeks to foster an environment of success and possibility for Native American students and patrons. We are advocates for the incorporation of Indigenous knowledge systems and research methodologies within contemporary library practice. ASU Library welcomes members of the Akimel O’odham and Pee Posh, and all Native nations to the Library.
