The Future of Cars
The automobile shaped where and how we live, creating a dependence on fossil fuels, increasing pollution, hastening climate change and urban sprawl. After a century of steady improvements, new technologies and services may make auto ownership a thing of the past—but that’s only one part of the equation. For us to counter the negative aspects of automobility, we need to consider the human component too.
In this Lab, interdisciplinary teams pose questions addressing the complex relationship we have with cars, including its impact on policies that have created, reinforced, and now may overturn automobility. Students will collaboratively on three core projects (or more depending on student interests!) that explore the impact of the car on our daily lives, how the automobile has shaped how we think about the city, and how we might re-design the car and its context.
The ASU Library acknowledges the twenty-three Native Nations that have inhabited this land for centuries. Arizona State University's four campuses are located in the Salt River Valley on ancestral territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) Indian Communities, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today.
