Individual presentation: Where does my money go?
Marketing researchers say people between 18 and 24 spend more than $160 billion a year on what they classify as “non-essential” items. In fact, companies have developed a list of milestones people in this group will face and how they will convince them of the brands they will purchase as they achieve those points:
This exercise is designed to help you learn where your money goes as well as how to perform some basic research, turn it into understandable prose, and present that research to a group. It is possible you will discover things about the firms you patronize that you may not like. You will also experience APA style, the preferred reference system for business and humanities research.
Mon Sept 10: Each student will upload a list of the three companies with which they spend the most money.
Fri Sept 14: One of those companies will be assigned for the presentation. We will try to avoid duplication. Students will then use the research tools discussed in class to answer these questions:
Is the firm publicly-held or private?
Who are the president, chairman of the board, and chief executive officer?
Where is the firm headquarters located?
How long has it been in business?
What are its sustainability policies?
What are its human rights policies?
If publicly held: What has been its 52-week performance? What is the dividend, if any?
Did the firm report a profit or loss in its last fiscal year?
Once you have your answers, you will turn them into a two-page essay and presentation discussing the answers to those questions.
