Crafting Your Story

What story do you want to tell about your complex issue?  The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has the AAAS Communication Toolkit which points out the differences in communication styles between scientists and the general public.  Knowing the key to your audience is important and having a concise message is very important.

When speaking with other researchers you may tend to start with the background to offer context for your work.  With the general public, it's important to capture their attention first. Focusing your message can be done with these two strategies:

  • Why should I care?  Start with the big picture and then offer supporting details.
  • Three-point structure. What are the three things you want your audience to remember and to respond to?

The ASU Library acknowledges the twenty-three Native Nations that have inhabited this land for centuries. Arizona State University's four campuses are located in the Salt River Valley on ancestral territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) Indian Communities, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today. ASU Library acknowledges the sovereignty of these nations and seeks to foster an environment of success and possibility for Native American students and patrons. We are advocates for the incorporation of Indigenous knowledge systems and research methodologies within contemporary library practice. ASU Library welcomes members of the Akimel O’odham and Pee Posh, and all Native nations to the Library.
