Introduction to Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

Is the book or journal article you need on a different ASU campus, shelved in the High Density Collection, or is it not available in any ASU Library?
The ASU Library provides free services that will get you these materials.  

To determine which service you need to use ...

  • Journal Articles:
    • If you need an article that is not available online, use the INTERLIBRARY LOAN service to request the item.  Doesn't matter if the article is available in the ASU Library in print, microformat or not available at ASU at all.   A scanned copy of the article will be placed in your ILLiad account for 60 days. 
  • Books:
    • If the book is available in an ASU Library, you have two options:
      • Go to the library where the book is located and using the call number, find the book, or
      • Use the REQUEST service to have it picked up and held for you at the ASU Library of your choice. (Most useful when the book is located in a library on a different campus.) 
    • If the book is available in the ASU Library but it is currently checked out, you have two options:
      • Use the REQUEST service to have that ASU copy recalled and held for you to pickup.
      • Use the BORROW IT NOW service to borrow a different copy of the book from another library. (Usually the faster of the two choices. )
    • If the book is not available in the ASU Library
      • Use the INTERLIBRARY LOAN service to borrow the book from another library.

Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery ... Access Your Account

To access your Interlibrary Loan account start with the Libraries home page (  Mouse over "My Accounts" on the black navigation bar, then click on "My Illiad Account".  Log in with your ASUrite ID and password. 


The first time you enter your account you'll be ask to verify some information such as department and preferred pickup location. The second time you log in and thereafter, you'll go directly into your account.  

Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery ... How to Submit a Request Directly From a Database

When you are in a library database, such as Compendex or Inspec, you'll be using the yellow "Get It @ ASU" button to determine if the ASU Library has the item online. 



When Get It @ ASU indicates that the article is not online, you may use Option 2 to request the item via the Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery service.  When you click on the "Loan/Document Delivery" link you'll be taken to the ILL login screen and once you login, the journal article request form will be automatically filled in by the computer.   All you have to do is check the form for accuracy and hit the submit button.

You may also submit a request manually.

  • Log in to your ILL account
  • In the left column under "New Request", select the appropriate type of form for your request (ex."Article" for a journal article, "Book" for borrowing a whole book", "Book Chapter" when you just want a section of the book, etc.)
  • When the form appears, fill it in with as much information as you have, then click submit.


Including the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) on a journal article request will result in a faster retrieval of the item.  You can find the ISSN for a journal by searching Google with the name of the journal and the word ISSN.

Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery ... How to View a Received Article

After you submit a request, your account will show the request as "Outstanding" and give the status.  Once the document is received, your account will have the document in the "Electronically Received Articles" section.  You will also be sent an email indicating that the item is now available.  Items stay in your account for 60 days and you may view online, print or download during that time.  After 60 days, the article is removed and the only way to get the article back is to submit another request for it.
