How to save a search in EBSCOhost to share

How to create a saved search strategy in EBSCOhost without creating a personal login.

Faculty often want students to look at articles on a topic, but could only keep the search strategy and hope that students copied and pasted it into the search box correctly. You can now make sure that the strategy is exactly what you want: the exact databases you searched and the exact limits to the specific type of article, publication date, etc.

  1. You may log into any specific EBSCOhost database or do one for all databases from EBSCOhost.
  2. Example with Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost)

Using this sample question, here is one possible keyword search strategy that could be used.

What are some sustainable development issues regarding water reuse (recycling)?

The keyword search strategy used. Note that the search doesn't start with any special limits like peer-reviewed because this is checking to see if the keyword search strategy is a good one first:

  1. Once you see how many items there are, you may want to then limit by the 5 most recent years of publication. You can do that on the left using the DATE SLIDER bar.

Before:                                                                                      AFTER the DATE LIMIT slider is set to the last 5 years

Note: If you need specific dates, such as for a historical event or items that come out in the next year, use the SHOW MORE option to set the dates.

  1. If you like the general direction of the list, you can stop here or decide that you want only academic articles, except that you notice in the SOURCE TYPE that the majority of the articles are scholarly/academic, so instead you check mark the PEER-REVIEWED option, only to discover that in this case, almost all are peer-reviewed.
  2. You can keep adjusting your search or even start over. Whatever is in the search and limits box to the left of the list of articles is exactly what gets saved for the search.

  1. At this point, you can save the search by clicking on the SHARE button over on the right hand side just above the first item in the list.

  1.  Here is the Link:

http://search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy1.lib.asu.edu/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&bquery=sustainable+development+AND+water+AND+(+recycling+OR+reuse+)&cli0=RV&clv0=Y&cli1=DT1&clv1=201501-202012&type=1&searchMode=Standard&site=ehost-live

  1. The link stays live for 1 year.
  2. This is what the saved search looks like when the save link is used. Note the limiters are added to the search as seen in the CURRENT SEARCH box.  Academic Journals as a limit does not show because Scholarly (Peer-Reviewed) Journals is a more specific limit.

Note:  The selected database does show, however, if you use more than 2, you will need to click on the CHOOSE DATABASES to see which ones are all checked,

The ASU Library acknowledges the twenty-three Native Nations that have inhabited this land for centuries. Arizona State University's four campuses are located in the Salt River Valley on ancestral territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) Indian Communities, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today. ASU Library acknowledges the sovereignty of these nations and seeks to foster an environment of success and possibility for Native American students and patrons. We are advocates for the incorporation of Indigenous knowledge systems and research methodologies within contemporary library practice. ASU Library welcomes members of the Akimel O’odham and Pee Posh, and all Native nations to the Library.
