Description: Welcome to the Using Keywords and Search Connectors tutorial! Keywords and search connectors are essential to effective database searches. This tutorial teaches you the basics about searching in Google and databases and how to tailor your approach for database searches.

Learning Objectives students will learn in this tutorial:

  1. Identify the differences between Google and library database search engines.
  2. Define keywords and explain their importance in database searches.
  3. Develop keywords and refine your topic based on what you learn.
  4. Explain the importance of search connectors and differentiate between the three most commonly used.
  5. Recall what resources and services are available on the ASU website for support, such as library guides and Ask a Librarian.

For this assignment, you will be required to complete the Using Keywords and Search Connectors LibLesson, developed by the ASU Library! To complete the assignment, you will need to self-enroll in the course, complete the modules, complete the quiz with a 90% or higher, and submit your badge to the 'Using Keywords and Search Connectors Badge Submission' assignment as proof of completion and participation. 

Upon completion of this LibLesson, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the differences between Google and library database search engines.
  2. Define keywords and explain their importance in database searches.
  3. Develop keywords and refine your topic based on what you learn.

Create an assignment for students to submit the badge to your class.

  1. Go to assignment, Create new.
  2. Assignment name
    • Using Keywords and Search Connectors Badge Submission
  3. Add the following text as the description:
    • After reviewing the Using Keywords and Search Connectors tutorial in its entirety, you will need to complete a 10-question quiz with a score of at least 90% to receive a passing grade. After you receive a 90% or higher on the quiz, download the badge as directed on the syllabus and submit it.
  4. Display grade as Complete/Incomplete
  5. Submission type 'Online' 
  6. Online Entry Options 'File Uploads'
  7. Save.

After students submit their badge, you will want to verify it is correct. The image below is what the certificate should look like. It includes the badge title, the student's name, their ASUrite email, and the date of completion.
