Overview of the Evaluating Sources Tutorial
Description: Evaluating sources for your research project is a crucial step that involves thoroughly assessing their credibility, reliability, and overall relevance to your specific topic of interest. The evaluation process helps ensure that the information you are using is accurate and trustworthy and enhances the quality of your research. In this tutorial, we will explore effective evaluation methods that can be applied to various sources, whether they are found on the web or through the ASU Library.
Learning objectives students will learn in this tutorial:
- Identify common factors that impact the credibility of information.
- Recognize the importance of evaluating the reliability of sources using different strategies.
- Apply the SIFT evaluation method in your search for sources.
- Recall the different components of the ACT UP evaluation method when reviewing your sources.
Adding LibLessons to your course
To add to your class, follow the steps below.
- Go to assignment, Create new.
- Assignment name
- Evaluating Sources Credential Assignment
- Add the following text as the description:
- For this assignment, you will be required to complete the Evaluating Sources LibLesson, developed by the ASU Library! In this tutorial, we will explore effective evaluation methods that can be applied to various sources, whether they are found on the web or through the ASU Library. Completing this assignment will take approximately 30 minutes, not including the wait for the email notification.
- To complete the assignment, you will need to:
- Self-enroll in the course using this link: https://canvas.asu.edu/enroll/GJJNJ8
- Complete the modules.
- Complete the quiz with a 90% or higher.
- Check your ASUrite email for the credential award notification. The email take up to 2 hours.
- Once the credential is awarded, it will appear in your list of credentials below.
- Click the submit button next to the credential required for the assignment.
- Display grade as Complete/Incomplete or as Points depending on how you wish to grade the assignment.
- Submission type 'External Tool'
- Under External Tool Options select 'Find'
- Select the CredID Tool from the list.
- Save.
After students submit their credential, you will want to verify that it is correct. The image below is what the credential will look like in the Canvas Speed Grader tool. The two blue markers indicate where you will find the student's identification information.
- On the credential, the students ASUrite email will be listed here.
- In the Speed Grader tool, that students name will be listed here.
Note: The example is from the LibLesson: Searching for Articles and Sources credential.
