Overview of the MLA Citation Style Tutorial

Description: What is MLA citation style, and why do you need to cite sources using a specific format? How will learning the mechanics of MLA style benefit you in your academic career, and how do you cite specific materials using this format? Complete this tutorial to find out the answers to these important questions!

At the end of the tutorial, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of citing sources and when you should cite sources.
  2. Recognize the disciplines that use MLA citation style.
  3. Identify the core elements of a citation in MLA style.
  4. Recall the citation components for commonly used source materials.

Adding LibLessons to your course

To add to your class, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to assignment, Create new.
  2. Assignment name
    • MLA Citation Style Credential Assignment
  3. Add the following text as the description:
    • For this assignment, you will be required to complete the MLA Citation Style LibLesson, developed by the ASU Library! This tutorial is designed to help you learn the specifics of MLA Citation Style and how to cite different resources. Completing this assignment will take approximately 30 minutes, not including the wait for the email notification.
    • To complete the assignment, you will need to:
      1. Self-enroll in the course using this link: https://canvas.asu.edu/enroll/36EHX4
      2. Complete the modules.
      3. Complete the quiz with a 90% or higher.
      4. Check your ASUrite email for the credential award notification. The email take up to 2 hours.
        • Once the credential is awarded, it will appear in your list of credentials below.
      5. Click the submit button next to the credential required for the assignment.
  4. Display grade as Complete/Incomplete or as Points depending on how you wish to grade the assignment.
  5. Submission type 'External Tool' 
  6. Under External Tool Options select 'Find'
    • Select the CredID Tool from the list.
  7. Save.

After students submit their credential, you will want to verify that it is correct. The image below is what the credential will look like in the Canvas Speed Grader tool. The two blue markers indicate where you will find the student's identification information.

  1. On the credential, the students ASUrite email will be listed here.
  2. In the Speed Grader tool, that students name will be listed here.

 Note: The example is from the LibLesson: Searching for Articles and Sources credential.
