Overview of the Understanding Research: The Web and the Library Tutorial

Description: Searching for information can be challenging for anyone, no matter how experienced they are. However, a little bit of understanding and preparation will give you more confidence in approaching research. In this tutorial, you will learn about the research process, get an overview of web and library resources, and how to get additional support when needed.

Learning objectives students will learn in this tutorial:

  1. List the steps of the research process and recognize the importance of getting assistance.
  2. Recognize the key elements of the web and the benefits of using it in your research.
  3. Identify the types of web resources and the properties of each resource.
  4. Define the importance of using library research databases for evidence in your research.
  5. Recall tips on using library research databases.
  6. Choose an ASU library resource or support that can help you when in need.

Adding LibLessons to your course

To add to your class, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to assignment, Create new.
  2. Assignment name
    • Understanding Research: The Web and the Library Credential Assignment
  3. Add the following text as the description:
    • For this assignment, you will be required to complete the Understanding Research: The Web and the Library LibLesson, developed by the ASU Library! In this tutorial, you will learn about the research process, get an overview of web and library resources and how to get additional support when needed. Completing this assignment will take approximately 30 minutes, not including the wait for the email notification.
    • To complete the assignment, you will need to:
      1. Self-enroll in the course using this link: https://canvas.asu.edu/enroll/NLPFEN
      2. Complete the modules.
      3. Complete the quiz with a 90% or higher.
      4. Check your ASUrite email for the credential award notification. The email take up to 2 hours.
        • Once the credential is awarded, it will appear in your list of credentials below.
      5. Click the submit button next to the credential required for the assignment.
  4. Display grade as Complete/Incomplete or as Points depending on how you wish to grade the assignment.
  5. Submission type 'External Tool' 
  6. Under External Tool Options select 'Find'
    • Select the CredID Tool from the list.
  7. Save.

After students submit their credential, you will want to verify that it is correct. The image below is what the credential will look like in the Canvas Speed Grader tool. The two blue markers indicate where you will find the student's identification information.

  1. On the credential, the students ASUrite email will be listed here.
  2. In the Speed Grader tool, that students name will be listed here.

 Note: The example is from the LibLesson: Searching for Articles and Sources credential.
